Alfred the Great remains the only English sovereign to have been officially granted the epithet “the Great.” King of Wessex from 871 until his death, Alfred ruled during one of the most turbulent periods in English history, when Viking invasions threatened the survival of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.
Beyond his military achievements, Alfred is remembered for his efforts to strengthen learning, law, and government. After defeating the Viking leader Guthrum at the Battle of Edington in 878, Alfred established a more stable political order, negotiated the division of England with the Vikings, and promoted education among his nobles. His translation projects, legal reforms, and support for scholarship helped preserve elements of Anglo-Saxon culture and laid important foundations for the later unification of England.
