The Northman is an upcoming film from director Robert Eggers. Eggers made his debuts in 2015 with the critically acclaimed film The Witch. In 2019 he followed it up with The Lighthouse. Both films were period pieces set it historical New England. With his new film, The Northman, Eggers travels farther back in time and across the ocean.
The Northman tells the tale of Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) on a quest to avenge his murdered father and save his mother. The story is based loosely on Book 3 and boook 4 of Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum. In the Gesta Danorum Amleth’s father is murdered by his uncle, who then marries Amleth’s mother. Amleth pretends to crazy while he plots his revenge. The story of Amleth inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The Northman is an epic revenge thriller, that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.
