Medieval remains uncovered near Durham University

medieval vampire skullFour human skulls, thought to date back to medieval times, have been uncovered near Durham University.

A team of archaeologists and builders made the discovery while carrying out work for the development of the university’s Palace Green Library, which this summer was home to the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition.

Construction work has now been halted to obtain the necessary legal permission from the Government’s Ministry of Justice to carry out an archaeological excavation.

Archaeologists intend to investigate the area further before taking the bones away for further examination and then, by law, they must be placed in an approved burial ground.
